Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson reveals character will explore sexuality in final season
The last season of Broad City will see Abbi Jacobson’s character have a relationship with a woman.
Things are set to get all emotional as the upcoming fifth season of Broad City will be its last, but the New York City-based show is set to go out with a bang.
Ahead of the season premiere, co-creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer revealed in an interview that Jacobson’s character, Abbi Abrahams, will explore her sexuality by having a relationship with a woman.
Jacobson said she made the decision after feeling inspired by events in her own life. Last year, Jacobson came out as bisexual, saying at the time: “I kind of go both ways; I date men and women.”
During the recent interview with the New York Times, Jacobson said: “That’s in my book, and I wanted to put that in the show. Abbi’s not the fumbling idiot we’re used to seeing, trying to ask someone out. It feels more real.”
Ilana Glazer added: “For the whole show, we’ve been figuring out how much different we are than our characters. Now that it’s over, I feel so free and proud to be like, that is us. It’s not completely, exactly us, but it’s us.”
“Everyone who works with us has gotten queerer and queerer in the past six years. I swear to God.”

Talking about how the decision for Abrahams to have a same-sex relationship came to the pair easily, Jacobson said: “I really feel like our show has been so queer from the get-go.”
Glazer replied: “Queerer than we knew. Behind the scenes, in front of the cameras. Everyone who works with us has gotten queerer and queerer in the past six years. I swear to God.”
Jacobson recently wrote about her experience coming out in her book I Might Regret This. Talking about the importance of taking time out to process everything, the actress wrote: “I knew the past year had cracked me open and changed the assumptions of what my life could be. I wanted to create time to specifically think about that.”
Jacobson also lends her voice to the role of Princess Bean in Netflix’s Disenchantment.
Broad City returns to Comedy Central on January 24.
