54% of Conservatives would back Trump for British prime minister
More than half Conservative Party members think Donald Trump would make a good UK prime minister, according to a YouGov poll for Channel 4.
The survey of 892 Tory Party members was conducted ahead of an episode of Dispatches called “Battle for the Tory Party,” which airs on Monday (July 8) at 8pm.
Some party members were interviewed by Dispatches in a preview video for the episode.
One said he found Trump “refreshing,” and another said: “I think he does quite a lot of good in certain areas.”
The party’s 160,000 members are about to choose between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to be the country’s new prime minister, and according to Dispatches they make up 0.2 percent of the population.
Of these, almost half are over the age of 65, 71 percent are male and 97 percent are white.
56 percent of members surveyed said Islam is a threat to the British way of life and 42 percent believed that having people from a wide variety of racial and cultural backgrounds in the UK has damaged society.
Almost half of Conservatives do not think that LGBT+ inclusive education in schools should be required
The poll also found that 49 percent of party members said schools should not be required to teach lessons inclusive of LGBT+ relationships.
The majority of those surveyed wanted to bring back the death penalty for certain crimes, and 46 percent believed that climate change concerns have been exaggerated.
In another preview for the episode, Dispatches said it had discovered new concerns of Islamophobia in the party, and that members had been suspended.
The preview showed comments allegedly made by Conservative Party members on social media.
One said: “I would ban all Muslims from entering the whole of Great Britain.”
“Islamic filth what a horrible cult,” said another.
A Conservative Party spokesperson told Channel 4: “Those people making these posts that we have found to be members of the party have been suspended pending investigation.
“Discrimination or abuse of any kind is wrong and will not be tolerated.”
