Nancy Pelosi ripping up Trump’s State of the Union speech is the light we need in this dark, dark world
While the president of the United States was washed in a wave of applause, Donald Trump’s vice president clapping behind him, Nancy Pelosi picked up a piece of paper and ripped it in half.
The speaker of the house placed the torn sheets on the polished table, a graceful finale to a hostile series of snubs from the Democrat against Trump.
With Trump blissfully unaware behind the rostrum, the act was in full view of the television cameras. Trump’s back turned but with the eyes of the world staring at Pelosi and, thus, a meme was born.
Footage of Pelosi, with a face of vague, distant disgust, tearing her copy of the president’s speech went viral, capturing the divisions radiating throughout Capitol Hill.
Wait, why was Nancy Pelosi ripping paper?
Later quizzed by a reporter as she left the halls of Capitol, she said: “Because it was the courteous thing to do, considering the alternative.”
Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night just a day before Congress votes on whether to convict or acquit him on two articles of impeachment – one for abuse of power and one for obstruction of Congress.
The meeting between the pair was hotly anticipated, considering neither had been in the same room as the other since October; Pelosi abruptly left a White House meeting after lecturing a scowling Trump.
So, the sour dynamic was watched by keen viewers. Trump refused to shake Pelosi’s hand and later she omitted the customary laudatory words in her introduction of the president.
Twitter decreed Pelosi as the ‘level of petty’ that we should all aspire to be.

But it wasn’t just the speaker’s paper snub that got the meme treatment.
