The coronavirus pandemic has caused a rather awkward plot hole in Glee, more than five years after it ended.
Ryan Murphy‘s best-known TV show wasn’t exactly known for its narrative consistency at the best of times after the first couple of seasons – half the characters literally change age in season three and we’re still not over it – but the pandemic has caused one hell of an additional plot hole.

The issue stems from the very last episode of Glee, which featured a flash-forward to a pregnant, married Rachel Berry accepting the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in the fictional show Jane Austen Sings.
The problem? The flash-forward to the packed auditorium is set in the year 2020, when the Tony Awards are very much not happening.
The 74th annual edition of the annual Broadway event had been set to take place in June, but it’s currently unclear when, if or how the ceremony will actually happen.
The plot hole extends to a lot of the other flash-forward plot points, too – Blaine and Kurt definitely weren’t visiting the Harvey Milk School that same day, because schools are closed, and their reunion with Mercedes, Artie and Tina definitely broke a lot of social distancing guidelines.
Of course, Glee’s flash-forward also featured Sue Sylvester having served an uneventful four years as vice president under Jeb Bush – which, frankly, doesn’t sound so bad given the real-life alternative.
Rachel Berry is 2020’s only Tony winner.
One Twitter fan joked: “The 2020 Tony awards are cancelled, hence the only Tony winner of 2020 is Rachel Berry, from the Glee 2020 flash-forward. I believe this is what we deserve.”

Another added: “Everyone is so shook that Rachel won a Tony Award in 2020 in the Glee finale and now in 2020, there’s no Tony Awards but like… Are we even gonna pretend that the Glee finale or in fact, any of the final two seasons even made any sort of sense anyway?”
One Twitter user suggested: “The Tony Awards getting cancelled in the year that Rachel Berry wins one completely resets the timeline so that Glee itself never existed.”
