WWE star and Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress both throw their hats in the ring to replace Ruby Rose as Batwoman

Ruby Rose announced this week that she will not be returning to Batwoman for season two, and some high profile stars are already talking about replacing her.

The CW series kicked off last year with Rose, who is a lesbian, in the titular role – but this week it was revealed that she will not be returning to the set and her character will be recast.

When Batwoman producers said they will cast an openly LGBT+ star in the role, two high-profile figures threw their hats into the ring: Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress Stephanie Beatriz and WWE star Sonya Deville.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz hinted that she would be interested in playing Batwoman.

Beatriz, who is bisexual, sent Twitter into overdrive when she said she was reading “everything about Batwoman“, hinting that she is interested in taking on the role.

Her tweet has been liked more than 40,000 times and spawned some loving responses from her fans.

WWE superstar Deville, whose real name is Daria Berenato, is also putting up a fight on Twitter for the role. She tweeted: “Give me a shot at Batwoman” and tagged the show’s production company and producers.

When another Twitter user said she has the “athletic build for the part”, DeVille replied: “I think you’re onto something.”

It is unclear if either stars are entirely serious in their pursuit of the role – Beatriz is still main cast on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Deville’s experience is primarily in wrestling.

Ruby Rose announced this week that she will not be returning to the show’s second season.

Rose’s exit from the show after just one season came as a shock to fans earlier this week.

The TV star had blazed a trail with the CW show, playing the out-and-proud vigilante Kate Kane, who takes on the titular superhero mantle.

Batwoman wrapped up its first season this week, and has already been renewed for a second – but Rose surprised many by announcing her departure from the role.

In a statement, she said: “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season.

“This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No.

Ruby Rose didn’t explain why she quit Batwoman, but Deadline reports it is unrelated to an on-set injury that shut down production while filming on the first season.

Following her exit from the show, an insider told TVLine that the decision wasn’t entirely her own, and described it as being more like a “break-up”.

“It was a breakup. She wasn’t happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with?

“No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned if they parted ways.

“It just wasn’t a good fit.”
