Gabrielle Union has a simple warning for transphobic bigots coming after her and her family
Gabrielle Union has issued a warning to any transphobes who are thinking about coming after her family, especially her trans stepdaughter Zaya Wade.
Union is raising four kids with former NBA star Dwyane Wade, including Wade’s daughter Zaya, who came out as transgender in February.
Speaking to Variety, she said of Zaya’s journey to becoming her real self: “With all of the love comes the hate too. It’s watching the love handle the hate that has been encouraging.
“We’re just loving and accepting our kids, which is not revolutionary. To some people it’s nuts.
“For those people who have spoken out so publicly against our family, I’m not standing on my own.
“The cavalry is arriving, and they are unafraid to stand in their truth and not be compromising when we look at right and wrong.”
Last month, Union revealed the advice she gives to other parents of trans kids.
She told The View: “To love your child, listen to your child, accept your child. Reject the notion that your children are disposable if they are not little mini versions of you.
“Allowing them to be exactly who they are and loving them and supporting them and hopefully guiding them to be a loving, compassionate and open-minded global citizen should be the goal.”
Gabrielle Union celebrated “inspiring” Zaya Wade on her 13th birthday.
Zaya Wade turned 13 on May 29, and to celebrate her birthday Gabrielle Union posted on Instagram: “Happy Birthday baby! I can’t believe you are 13!
“Zaya Wade you are such an inspiration and motivation to get my butt up everyday and fight. When I’m weary, frustrated, full of rage, I see your face and your joy and you living your best life and I want that for all of us.
“I love you sooooo much kid! Enjoy this day and everyday knowing you are loved, protected, respected, admired and celebrated.”
