Lili Reinhart: ‘I am ashamed of the racism that exists in this country.’

After the death of an unarmed Black man, George Floyd, curdled into weekslong protests against institutional racism, Reinhart, 23, has emerged as an outspoken ally.

She has often used her social media as a megaphone to amplify Black activists and content-makers as demonstrations continue to paralyse major US cities and many more across the world.

Minnesota officials charged Derek Chauvin with second-degree murder Tuesday evening. Chauvin pinned Floyd down by the neck with his knee for several minutes despite repeated, spluttered warnings of “I can’t breathe” from the 46-year-old man.

Reinhart addressed the situation on her Twitter, writing: “I want to say that I am ashamed of the racism that exists in this country.

“We are taught to look at our police officers as helpful and friendly when we learn about ‘leaders’ in elementary school. Our ‘leaders’ have failed us today.”

She continued: “I can’t begin to imagine the horror of worrying that you won’t be protected by your ‘leaders’ because of the colour of your skin.

“I know that white privilege exists and I could never fully understand what it’s like to be oppressed because of my race.

“I don’t have all the right words, but I stand by you. #BlackLivesMatter.”
