Donald Trump’s niece Mary felt unable to come out after her grandmother called Elton John a ‘f****t’
Mary Trump, the niece of US president Donald Trump, felt she was unable to come out to her family after her grandmother called Elton John a “faggot”.
In her warts-and-all book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, Mary Trump detailed the chasm that broke between her and her family over her sexuality.
Chiefly, following a homophobic comment from her grandmother, also called Mary.
Mary Trump never came out to her family after her grandmother called Elton John a ‘faggot’.
In 1997, Towerload reported, Mary planned to marry a woman in Maui, Hawaii.
But a week before the wedding, the Trump family got together because Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, was on his deathbed.
During their time together, Mary’s relationship with her grandmother was strained due to a passing comment she issued while the family discussed Princess Diana and her recent death. John performed at Diana’s funeral, where he performed a tear-jerking rendition of “Candle In The Wind”.
Mary wrote in the memoir that her Scottish-American homemaker grandmother spouted: “It’s a disgrace they’re letting that little faggot Elton John sing at [Princess Diana’s] service.”
“I’d realised it was better that she didn’t know I was living with,” recounted Mary, “a woman.”
The psychologist detailed in the book that, ultimately, she went through with the wedding with the woman, with whom she raised a daughter, Avery together. who all live with one another in New York City.
Mary has spoken candidly about how a silent homophobia fissured cracks through her family. She recounted to the Washington Post: “Homophobia was never an issue because nobody ever talked about gay people, well, until my grandmother called Elton John [a faggot].”
Trump himself has overseen a harsh rollback of LGBT+ across housing, education, the military, healthcare and more arenas of American society all the while he and his officials tout LGBT+ Pride flags and claim that “[Trump] has a great record when it comes to the LGBT community“.
