Star Wars fans demand Disney fire Mandalorian star accused of ‘mocking trans people’ with ‘boop/beep’ pronouns rant
Gina Carano, who appears in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian, has been criticised after adding “boop/bop/beep” to her Twitter profile in lieu of pronouns.
The Mandalorian actor and former MMA star was accused of “mocking trans people” with the update, prompting calls for Disney Plus to remove her from the series.
Carano, who plays Cara Dune in the Star Wars spin-off, added “boop/bop/beep” to her profile after fans asked if she would display her pronouns as an act of trans solidarity.
Though all people – cis and trans – have pronouns, the act of sharing them on social media bios and in person has been popularised by trans and non-binary people hoping to avoid being misgendered. Many cis people do the same to support the trans community.
Carano acknowledged that this convention had been explained to her by Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal, whose pronouns are displayed in his Twitter name.
“Yes, Pedro and I spoke and he helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios,” she tweeted Saturday (September 12).
“I didn’t know before but I do now.”
Despite this, Carano insisted: “I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to”.
She painted this as a decision to “stand against bullying” and to uphold “the freedom to choose”.
Yes, Pedro & I spoke & he helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose. ?

Hours later Carano explained “after months of harassing”, she had decided “to put three very controversial words” in her bio.
“I’m not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation,” she argued.
They’re mad cuz I won’t put pronouns in my bio to show my support for trans lives.
After months of harassing me in every way. I decided to put 3 VERY controversial words in my bio.. beep/bop/boop

Carano denied being transphobic in a second tweet.
“Beep/bop/boop has zero to do with mocking trans people [heart emoji, and 100 per cent] to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes,” she wrote.
Beep/bop/boop has zero to do with mocking trans people 🤍& 💯 to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes.
I want people to know you can take hate with a smile. So BOOP you for misunderstanding. 😊 #AllLoveNoHate pic.twitter.com/Qe48AiZyOL— Gina Carano 🕯 (@ginacarano) September 14, 2020
When one follower asked if she could see “how some would read that as mocking”, Carano ignored the question.
Instead, she replied: “I don’t think trans people would like all of you trying to force a woman to put something in her bio through harassment and name calling EVERYDAY for MONTHS.”
I don’t think trans people would like all of you trying to force a woman to put something in her bio through harassment & name calling EVERYDAY for MONTHS. Such as “Racist” Transphobe” “Bitch” “Weirdo” “ I hope you die” “I hope you lose your career” “your fat, you’re ugly”.

Many were quick to rebut her argument, explaining that regardless of her intent, her actions had upset many trans people.
I’m sorry but if people are telling you that it is offensive and hurtful then why keep it up? I don’t think people have to put pronouns if they do not want to but do not mock people who do. You might not think it has a mocking tone but it clearly does

Cis people do not get to determine what is and isn’t harmful to trans people and many trans people have said any sort of pronoun mocking/jokes from cis people, no matter the intent, causes harm.

Here’s the thing tho. You might not think you’re mocking trans people, & hey perhaps you’re not. But when people tell us they’re hurt by something we’re done, it’s kind to listen & make changes.
Your need for those seemingly funny words is likely less important than their hurt?— Samantha. #BLM (@samanthafraser) September 13, 2020
Carano’s actions come after she was criticised for suggesting COVID-19 regulations were a form of oppression and for retweeting an inflammatory anti-Black Lives Matter video.
Together, these controversies have led to calls for Disney to drop Carano from The Mandalorian.
Welp Gina Carano is gross, a bully, and I’m seriously hoping @Disney gets rid of her and her disgusting attitude in the @themandalorian going forward, now.
The replies are full of right-wing assholes cheering her on. pic.twitter.com/RPpy9Rwq0j— Mike Draco (@digitaldraco) September 13, 2020
Replace Gina Carano with a trans woman on The Mandalorian.
