Cynthia Nixon backs calls for Sharon Stone to be Sex and the City’s new Samantha Jones

Sex and the City 3 with Sharon Stone as Samantha Jones? Cynthia Nixon would like to see it.
Nixon has backed calls for Stone to take over the role of Samantha in the mythical Sex and the City 3 – but said she would also like to see a woman of colour joining the cast.
The star appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she confirmed that there are no current plans for a third film – but said she would love to see Stone take on the role of Samantha.
Stone also appeared on the show and expressed her interest in the Sex and the City role.
When asked if she had heard of fan speculation that she could replace Kim Cattrall as Samantha, Stone said: “I did not hear about it, but any time I could have an opportunity to work with Cynthia would be an honour to me.”
Nixon said: “I think Sharon would be, of course, totally amazing. Kim was incredibly great as Samatha, I think Sharon would totally make it her own.”
However, she added: “I’ve also heard many people say, including Kim Cattrall herself, that if we were to have a different fourth woman that maybe it would be a woman of colour this time and I think that would be amazing as well.”
Cattrall threw her support behind an actor of colour joining the cast on Twitter in 2018, naming both Tiffany Haddish and Sofia Vergara as “fabulous actresses” that would “make Samantha their own”.
Sex and the City 3 script existed – but was cancelled.
Cynthia Nixon, who currently stars in Netflix’s Ratched alongside Sharon Stone and Sarah Paulson, became an international star when she played Miranda on Sex and the City.
The series went on to inspire two film spin-offs – and while fans have long awaited a third feature-length outing for Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, no such film has materialised.
Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed in 2017 that a “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable” script existed for Sex and the City 3, but said it would not be made.
Kim Cattrall denied reports contract negotiations had collapsed because of demands on her part, saying she had opted out of the film when asked in 2016.
The series was hugely popular during its original run, but it has faced criticism in recent years for problematic humour, as well as the stark lack of diversity in its cast.
The show’s creator Darren Star was asked about the show’s lack of diversity by The Hollywood Reporter in a 2019 interview.
“That’s the one thing I probably would have liked to have done differently,” he said.
“Hopefully it transcended that, but looking back, wow, that would have been another way to make it feel more groundbreaking.”
