Disney shows the big, beautiful world of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie in kaleidoscopic new trailer
The first trailer for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has been released, and to say queer people are excited would be an understatement.
The film, based on the West End musical of the same name, stars Max Harwood as 16-year-old Jamie New, who has vivid dreams of becoming a drag queen.
In the first trailer, released to mark National Coming Out Day, Jamie sits in class gazing at pictures of drag queens on his phone as his teacher Miss Hedge (Sharon Horgan) asks the class what careers they plan on pursuing.
When she asks Jamie what he wants to be, he simply answers: “A performer.”
He later tells his best friend: “Do you remember when we was little, we used to play dress up? Well, for me, that’s a game I don’t want to stop playing,” as he puts a pair of sparkling red heels on the table in front of her.
While the film, due for release on 26 February, looks set to be a fabulous, glowing celebration of queerness, it is also sure to be an emotional rollercoaster.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will delve into the rejection Jamie faces from his father, who wonders what is “wrong” with his son.
“I’m done with this. I wanted a son so badly and I got you,” his father tells Jamie in the trailer. But he can always fall back on the love of his mother, who encourages him to pursue his dream of becoming a drag queen.
The trailer, released on Sunday, sent LGBT+ fans into a frenzy as it bounded across the internet, leaving a trail of glitter in its wake.
Collectively, the internet agreed that Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is exactly what the world needs right now.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie also stars Sarah Lancashire, Lauren Patel, Shobna Gulati, Ralph Ineso, Adeel Akhtar, Samuel Bottomley and Richard E. Grant, while Jonathan Butterell directs.
The film was originally due to be released on 23 October but, like many others, it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 2017 musical – which in 2018 was nominated for five Olivier awards, and has won both Best New Musical and Best Original Cast Recording at the WhatsOn Stage Awards – started in Sheffield before transferring to London’s West End.
The musical was inspired by the 2011 BBC Three documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.
It will mark Harwood’s professional on-screen debut, after he won the role following an open-casting call in Sheffield.
