Elliot Page will continue playing Vanya Hargreeves in Umbrella Academy with no changes to character’s gender
Elliot Page will continue playing his Umbrella Academy character, Vanya Hargreeves, on Netflix. This follows Elliot’s emotional coming out as trans on social media yesterday.
In the show, Vanya is a cis woman who can absorb sound to gain energy and unleash fury on victims. Vanya is also telekinetic and can control the weather.
Insiders told Variety there are no plans to change the character’s gender.
Netflix has already updated Page’s name on the films and shows he’s been involved in. It is predicted those changes should be visible on the platform from today (2 December).
Their name has also been updated on IMDb and Wikipedia.
Page came out as trans on social media yesterday and received an outpouring of support from fans and other celebrities alike.
Elliot Page rose to fame in performances in Juno, Inception and X-Men. He was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for his performance in Juno.
The Umbrella Academy first aired on Netflix in 2019. The second season of the show ended in July this year. The show was renewed for a third season in November.
The official Umbrella Academy Instagram commented on Page’s coming out post: “So proud of our superhero!! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT!!!”
Fans on Twitter have speculated how the show will approach Vanya Hargreeves in the next season.
One fan said: “Ben turns into a f**king octopus alien, Five can time travel, Allison brainwashed a child, Klause speaks to and can control ghosts and Luther is half monkey, Vanya can be a man without breaking immersion.”
Another fan tweeted: “Elliot Page didn’t get nominated for an Oscar for his role in Juno for everyone to be calling him ‘Umbrella Academy star.'”
Producers are yet to confirm the release date for season three of The Umbrella Academy.
