Drag Race UK guest judge MNEK teases the biggest gag of the season
Drag Race UK guest judge MNEK told PinkNews of his pride at appearing as a guest judge on this week’s episode, and teased the biggest gag of season two.
The “Head & Heart” singer serves as this week’s guest judge of the UK version of RuPaul’s mammoth drag contest .
MNEK was hopeful he would be asked to return to the fabled halls of Drag Race UK after he coached the Frock Destroyerz to success in season one – and he was ecstatic when he was asked back as a guest judge for season two.
“I was part of the last season in a similar episode where I was vocal coaching the girl groups,” MNEK told PinkNews.
“That was so much fun, and I was so happy to be part of it from the first season. I was actually really hoping that they’d ask me to come back for the next season because I had a great time – and sure enough, they did, and I was also asked to be a guest judge. It was super fun as well to be next to Ru.”
MNEK also got a first-hand taste of the biggest gag of Drag Race UK season two – the pandemic-mandated seven month break in filming.
“This is the first episode back from quarantine, so they’d obviously had to go home in the middle of filming for like seven months and came back to the show, and I got to see just how they’ve been doing, so it was great to be a part of it,” he said.
MNEK says Drag Race UK ‘holds so much weight’ in the LGBT+ community.
MNEK also praised the Drag Race UK judging panel, which includes Michelle Visage alongside gay icons Graham Norton and Alan Carr.
“They were all really lovely and really sweet,” MNEK said.
“I’m happy to be part of a show like RuPaul’s Drag Race which holds so much weight in the community and is watched by everyone.
“It just makes us all so happy from the other side of the screen as well, so it’s great to be a part of it.”
Drag Race UK really pulled out the stops with its season two guest judges, which include Elizabeth Hurley, Lorraine Kelly, Sheridan Smith, Jourdan Dunn, Dawn French, Maya Jama and Jessie Ware.
The Only Way is Essex legend Gemma Collins will also star in next week’s episode, where she will play the Snatch Game with the contestants.
Drag Race UK season two continues Thursdays at 7pm on BBC iPlayer.
MNEK was speaking to PinkNews as part of the “It’s in Our Spirit” campaign from Absolut.
