Halsey opens up about using she/they pronouns: ‘It feels authentic to me’

Halsey revealed to fans that their recent pronoun change happened because it “feels most authentic to me”.

In March, Halsey subtly announced they would be using she/they pronouns on social media. The “Bad at Love” singer revealed the news by changing the bio sections of her Twitter and Instagram pages.

After an outpouring of love, the Grammy-nominated singer explained the change further in an Instagram story on Monday (22 March)

Halsey wrote: “For those asking RE: my updated IG bio, I am happy with either pronoun. The inclusion of ‘they’ in addition to ‘she’ feels most authentic to me.

“If you know me at all, you know what it means to me to express this outwardly. Thanks for being the best.”

Halsey said previously in a January 2020 interview for The Advocate they “don’t identify as non-binary or genderfluid” because she didn’t “personally feel like I’m at the point in my life where I’m prepared to identify that way”.

They added: “Will that change? Possibly. I don’t know. But I’ve never felt any reason to change the way that I refer to my gender identity.”

Halsey explained that her gender identity has “always been super, super fluid”, but she said she didn’t “live in a place that was very forgiving of that” growing up.

The bisexual singer, who is currently pregnant with her first child, also recently opened up about how her pregnancy has shaped her understanding of gender.

They said in an Instagram post in February that they thought pregnancy would “give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood'”. But she said the experience had “levelled my perception of gender entirely”.

“My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper aware of my humanness and that’s all,” Halsey wrote. “Doing a remarkable thing. And it’s grand. I hope the feeling lasts.”
