Steps and Michelle Visage drop instantly-iconic music video as band announces surprise new album
Steps and Michelle Visage dropped the futuristic “Heartbreak in This City” video, with the pop icons also announcing a surprise new album.
Set in a neon-splashed world, “Heartbreak in This City” sees the beloved British pop group and the RuPaul’s Drag Race judge throw on a lot of leather, ring telephones and dance in front of holograms.
If the future involves Michelle Visage and Steps, maybe the cruel, unrelenting passage of time isn’t so bad after all.
The video came alongside the incredible news Steps will be releasing a brand new album, What The Future Holds Pt 2, due to arrive 10 September.
If the name seems familiar, it’s because it’s a sequel to the band’s 2020 album, What the Future Holds, which explored how far Steps have come since they first formed 23 years ago.
Part two will span 15 tunes – 10 brand-new songs, with five acoustic versions of recent hit singles. It’ll include the Michelle Visage cut of “Heartbreak in This City”, which has already sent the gays into an absolute frenzy.
“What originally started as a deluxe version of the album has now become a full new record,” explained Steps member Faye Tozer in a press release.
“While lockdown has been really tough, we were fortunate enough to use the time to record a load of brand-new songs for you all!”
The music video – as the band are pretty much legally obligated to do – features a classic Steps dance routine choreographed by Mark Jennings. It was mainly shot in Manchester, England, in line with coronavirus restrictions, while Lisa Scott-Lee filmed her scenes in Dubai.
Visage plays the role of a “special agent” who visits Steps in “Heartbreak HQ” to track down those, well, experiencing heartbreak in the city.
Against space-age tech which tracks down heartbroken people lost in the looming skyscrapers and beeping blue lights, Visage and the band reflect on troubled relationships roiled by distrust and indecision.
Blade Runner who? Never heard of that franchise!
