Smash hit musical Hamilton to finally return to London’s West End with ‘tremendous gratitude’
The smash-hit musical Hamilton is returning to London’s West End in 2021.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s show about America’s Founding Fathers will reopen at Victoria Theatre from 19 August.
It will make its long-awaited return following theatre closures across the globe, and tickets go on sale soon via Ticketmaster and London Theatre Direct.
Hamilton is notable for featuring all non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures as a way to weave the tale of “America then, as told by America now”.
It draws heavily from hip-hop, soul and R&B in its soundtrack which features “My Shot”, “Aaron Burn, Sir”, “Right Hand Man” and “The Story of Tonight”.
Lin-Manuel Miranda confirmed the reopening saying: “For over a year the lights on the West End have been dark and our friends, family and colleagues on and off the stage have been out of work.
“It is with tremendous gratitude that we announce the return of Hamilton to London’s Victoria Palace Theatre this August. We will safely gather to tell this story again. We’ll be back.”
Since its sold-out debut run on Broadway in 2015 the musical has received a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, winning 11 including Best Musical.
It has gone on to open in cities across the globe, including a hugely successful West End run.
Last year saw the release of the original Broadway Production of Hamilton on streaming platform Disney+.
The one-off special was released exclusively on 3 July and starred Miranda as Alexander Hamilton.
It became one of the most streamed films of 2020 and went on to be nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Ticket details are yet to be revealed for Hamilton at Victoria Theatre, but they’re likely to be released soon.
They’ll be available from Ticketmaster and London Theatre Direct.
It follows up recent announcements that Wicked will return to Apollo Victoria Theatre in September and Dreamgirls is touring across the UK for the first time ever, kicking off in late 2021.
