DC Comics teases Pride month anthology with ‘be gay, do crime’ story and trans superheroes
DC Comics teased its upcoming DC Pride anthology and a series of variant covers celebrating its most iconic heroes.
In celebration of Pride month, DC Comics is joining in the celebrations by giving a spotlight to its queer comic heroes. This will include an 80-pages anthology series featuring queer stories and characters titled DC Pride, and a bunch of beautiful variant covers featuring LGBT+ DC characters. Not only will the anthology feature stories about queer characters, but the writers and artists are part of the LGBT+ community as well.
DC Pride will feature LGBT+ characters from all corners of the DC Universe including Batwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Flash and Aqualad. The anthology, which will be released on 8 June, will also introduce trans superhero Dreamer into the comic universe for the first time since her debut on the CW’s Supergirl.
DC Pride will also include a story titled “Be Gay, Do Crimes” which sees the fictional supervillain turned superhero Pied Piper face off against Drummer Boy. Pied Piper, whose real name is Hartley Rathaway, first appeared in The Flash #106 which was printed in 1959. Following the events of Crisis, it was revealed that Rathaway is gay in 1991’s The Flash #53, making him one of DC’s first openly gay characters.
The Pied Piper also appeared on the CW’s live-action series The Flash, portrayed by Andy Mientus. He was depicted as a former employee and protege of Dr Harrison wells who was disowned by his parents after he came out as gay.
The DC Pride will also feature the non-binary version of the Flash from Earth-11, a universe where the DC heroes are gender-flipped versions of the traditional Earth.
The comic is called “Clothes Makeup Gift” and sees Jess Chambers, who is an incarnation of the Flash, going on a shopping trip with Andy Curry.
DC will also release a series of Pride-themed variant covers showcasing DC’s leading characters throughout June. So fans can grab comics featuring queer covers with Batman, Harley Quinn, Superman, Wonder Woman and more.
