E3 2021: Breath of the Wild 2 gameplay shown off for the first time in jaw-dropping Nintendo Direct

Nintendo Direct Breath of the Wild seque

Thrilled gamers finally got to see the first trailer for the sequel to Breath of the Wild in action at the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct presentation.

Zelda fans have been eagerly awaiting even a crumb of information since its debut two years ago. Now we know it takes place up in the skies and is “aiming for a 2022 release”.

It’s still a little way off, then, but so far it’s looking gorgeous. The new E3 2021 trailer showed Link with a corrupted arm, flying over floating islands in the skies, and brand new Sheikah powers. It’s just enough to whet our appetites.

The game will have an official subtitle but Nintendo isn’t ready to reveal it yet. According to an interview with IGNthe title could give away what will happen in the game.

The HD remaster of Skyward Sword is also due out next month on 16 July. Plus Nintendo revealed a special Zelda Game & Watch console for the 35th anniversary, including the original NES game, its sequel, and Game Boy title Link’s Awakening.

Elsewhere it was a strong showing for Nintendo at E3 2021, with plenty of interesting games due out this year.

Tekken’s Kazuya Mishima is coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate as the next downloadable fighter. The news was revealed in a hilarious trailer that showed him throwing various Nintendo characters off a cliff – a reference to various cliff-throwing moments in the Tekken series.

Metroid fans will need to wait longer for Metroid Prime 4, but a big surprise is that the long-rumoured Metroid Dread is real and coming to Switch on 8 October.

The 2D adventure is a direct sequel to GBA game Metroid Fusion and looks to be doubling down on horror, with tense chase sequences against unrelenting robotic enemies. This is the first new 2D Metroid game in 19 years.

There were some other surprises at Nintendo’s E3 2021 showcase too. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a remake of the GBA strategy titles coming in December; Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (revealed at the Ubisoft event) is a new strategy game in the series due next year (with the original currently on sale on the eShop until 27 June); and a new game in the WarioWare series is coming on 10 September, full of microgames making use of the Joy-Con controllers.

Plus Mario Party Superstars will mix together the best bits of previous games in a new package, featuring 100 minigames from across the series and five classic boards. Even better: all game modes can be played online.

JRPG fans have Shin Megami Tensei V to look forward to when it launches exclusively on Switch on 12 November. As with the rest of the series (and Persona spin-off), you’ll play as a high school student who discovers new powers in a demon-infested world.

Also announced is that the Life is Strange series is coming to Switch. Both the Life is Strange Remastered Collection (the original game and its prequel Before the Storm) and the forthcoming Life is Strange: True Colors are on their way to Nintendo’s system.

Other announcements include Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania that remasters the first three games in the series in time with its 20th anniversary; a new game in the Danganronpa series is due later this year; and the likes of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Two Points Campus, Just Dance 2022, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 are all coming to Switch.
