Can you believe? Netflix just announced a new Queer Eye series with a new Fab Five
Netflix has announced its first international spin-off of the Queer Eye franchise, Queer Eye Germany!
Netflix rebooted Queer Eye in 2018, and in the years since its Fab Five –Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Bobby Berk and Antoni Porowski – have become household names, Emmy winners and all-round LGBT+ icons.
With the hit show about to enter its sixth season, Netflix has announced that a new version, with a new Fab Five, is coming soon.
Queer Eye Germany‘s Fab Five have been announced as: work/life coach Leni Bolt, fashionista Jan-Henrik Scheper-Stuke, beauty guru David Jakobs, nutrition expert Aljosha Muttardi and design executive Ayan Yuruk.
Netflix released a teaser on Instagram, where the American Fab Five text each other excitedly about the spin-off.
“Five brand new besties!” Bobby messages, whilst Jonathan asks, “What’s YASSSSS in German?!”
Leni, one of the German Fab Five, writes, “We hope we make you proud, and our heroes are just so amazing”, whilst Ayan texts, “We can’t wait for you to see the show!”
The German spin-off series will be produced by ITV Studio Germany.
It remains to be seen whether Queer Eye will expand into even more countries, following the template of RuPauls’ Drag Race, which has localised versions in Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Holland, Italy, Spain and the UK, with more on the way.
Since their rise to fame the US Fab Five have been praised for their advocacy work.
In 2019, Jonathan Van Ness came out as HIV positive, explaining that they “wanted to do something to move the conversation forward in a meaningful way around HIV/AIDS, and what it is to live with HIV, and to humanise and normalise a lot of the things I talk about.”
Karamo Brown co-founded 6in10.org in 2015, an organisation which tackles stigma around HIV and provides mental health support for the Black LGBT community.
