TikTok star sings WAP in style of Dolly Parton and it’s simultaneously ‘cursed’ and ‘jaw-dropping’
A TikToker has gone viral for her “cursed” impression of saint Dolly Parton if she ever covered Cardi B’s hit “WAP” – and it’s absolutely amazing.
The internet is a beautiful place where countless individuals can openly share their creativity with the world. There’s nothing more satisfying than someone who can perfectly blend two artists or songs into a satisfying mash-up for fans to enjoy.
And that’s where Rachel Harper, a self-described “TV writer-actor-chamedeon” on TikTok, comes in. Harper is infamous for her spot-on impressions of Adele, Julie Andrews, various Simpsons characters singing Lil Nas X and even a drunk Marry Poppins.
Yet, she recently released the cover to end all covers when she dropped a truly “cursed” mash-up of the queen of country and “WAP” – with a Green Day twist. It’s a lot, and it’s going to get stuck in the recesses of your mind for eternity.
Harper began the TikTok video innocently enough by duetting with another creator playing Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” on an acoustic guitar. She jokingly captioned the video with an apology to Parton and Cardi B for “this cursed video”.
Then, she launched into her impression of Saint Dolly should she ever have “country-fied” “WAP”. It’s an amazing impression with Harper able to mimic Parton’s unique singing voice and vocal tangs while performing the risqué Cardi B song.
@thatrachelharper #duet with @mk_guitar i apologise to both Dolly Partin ans Cardi B for this cursed video. #Fyp #foryoupage #dollyparton #wap #cardiB #impression
She then finished the hit with a short nod to the Green Day song by singing: “I hope you had the WAP of your life.”
And the internet has gobbled it all up, viewing the cover more than 6 million times on the video-sharing app.
One person commented that the mash-up should be called “Dolly WAParton” while another person simply wrote that their “jaw is on the FLOOR”.
“One day I’ll get to tell my grandchildren I was there when this was posted and I even commented,” one TikToker commented.
Even broadcasting company SiriusXM got in on the fun, saying Harper’s cover is “life changing”.
Harper told PinkNews that she used the word “cursed” to describe the mash-up as it “combines so many different genres of very different people”. But she believed “there is nothing less cursed than bringing” Dolly Parton and Cardi B together.
“One of the key thoughts behind mixing Dolly and ‘WAP’ is a sort of female liberation, Dolly is a big feminist icon – unashamed to be entirely herself, and ‘WAP’ explores female sexuality in a similar way,” Harper explained.
She continued: “There is no shame to being a woman and enjoying lyrics exploring that, men have been singing and rapping about sex for years so why shouldn’t female artists take control of that narrative?
“I also love that people have welcomed the thought of Dolly enjoying this so much, I like to think she would too.”
Harper added that the reception to the cover has been “largely lovely” and that any negative comments will just give her “more motivation and more material” for the future. So basically keep your eyes on her TikTok.
Harper went viral back in 2020 when a video of her singing “WAP” in the vocal style of 12 different celebrities including Dolly Parton (of course), Celine Dion and even Harry Potter’s Moaning Myrtle.
She then appeared on Ellen later that year to perform Iggy Azalea’s hit “Fancy” as Britney Spears, Shakira, Billie Eilish and more.
