Kim Petras drops incredibly NSFW ‘Slut Pop’ – but the response is mixed

Kim Petras released her new EP, the seriously NSFW Slut Pop, and people have thoughts.

The German singer dropped Slut Pop on Friday (11 February), just in time for Valentine’s Day.

With seven tracks, many less than two minutes long, the EP lasts just over 15 minutes – more than many of us could hope for on Valentine’s Day.

There’s everything from “Throat Goat,” about being the greatest of all time at oral sex, to “Treat Me Like A Slut,” an anthem for those with a kink for degradation, and They Wanna F**k,” literally a list of boys Petras has the hots for.

In short, it’s Kim Petras singing about her sexual fantasies for 15 minutes. Take “Throat Goat,” which sees her brag: “These bitches can’t suck like me / Walk in I’m the sucking queen / Look around, all eyes on me / Jack it off, I’ma suck it clean.”

Relatable.

Petras has spent the last week teasing the EP by sucking on lollipops, lip-syncing to the songs in her bedroom and retweeting fan art of her as the Green M&M.

Fans (including Drag Race‘s Courtney Act) couldn’t get enough of Petras entering her sex-empowerment era – especially as one of the world’s most visible trans pop stars.

Kim Petras and Dr Luke

However many were troubled by Kim Petras’ continued involvement with Dr Luke, who produced all seven tracks on Slut Pop.

Petras signed a publishing deal with Dr Luke’s company, Prescription Songs, early in her career. She recently signed with his label Amigo Records, an imprint of Republic Records.

Otherwise known as Lukasz Gottwald, Dr Luke, has long been one of the music industry’s most powerful producers.

But his reputation lies in tatters after numerous accusations of misconduct across the years. Most notably, Kesha sued Dr Luke in 2014, alleging that he drugged and raped her.

Gottwald denied all allegations and counter-sued Kesha for defamation and breach of contract. In 2020, a judge ruled that Kesha did defame Dr Luke.

Lady Gaga, Doja Cat, Fiona Apple, Kelly Clarkson, among other recording artists, have all sought to distance themselves from Gottwald since.

It’s why Petras name dropping Gaga in her song “Throat Goat” has left a bitter taste in the mouth of users, considering that Gaga is herself a survivor of sexual assault and defended Kesha in court.

Petras has been routinely pressed about her involvement with Dr Luke, whose involvement has often clouded her success. She first worked with the songwriter for her debut album, Clarity, in 2019.

“While I’ve been open and honest about my positive experience with Dr Luke, that does not negate or dismiss the experience of others or suggest that multiple experiences cannot exist at once,” she said of Kesha’s allegations in 2018.

When asked about her work with Luke in an interview with Buzzfeed last year, Petras said: “I just feel like a lot of it is, like, getting transferred to me.

“A lot of people like to blame women,” she said, adding: “I think I’m sometimes being held to a different standard than other artists.”
