Britney Spears explains why she’s ‘scared to have a baby in this world – especially in America’
Britney Spears has revealed she is “scared to have a baby in this world” as she expects her first child with Sam Asgari.
The pop star announced her pregnancy last week (11 April) just months after being released from a cruel conservatorship that barred her from having a third child.
Spears shared an old black and white photograph of herself while pregnant with her eldest son, Sean Preston, in a Sunday (17 April) Instagram post. She welcomed her firstborn in 2005 with her then-husband Kevin Federline.
The 40-year-old reflected on what it means to have a baby nearly two decades since and how her life has changed, from the documentaries that charted her conservatorship to now living as a free woman.
Britney Spears: ‘I’m scared to have a baby in this world’
“This was a time in my life when if someone was to even mention me being locked in a home… being seen naked every day when I changed like some sort of criminal,” she wrote on having Sean.

“My guards would literally put the devil or God himself to the ground in literally a split of two seconds!
“Yes, I’m scared to have a baby in this world, especially in America where they did four documentaries without me in them and telling my story!”
The complex legal arrangement that restricted Spears’ life for nearly 14 years has been the topic of several documentaries, including The New York Times‘ Framing Britney Spears and Controlling Britney Spears as well as Netflix’s Britney vs Spears.
“Yet … THAT helped end the conservatorship!” she continued. “Hmm … Oh well… I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many documentaries on someone unless they are dead! I mean was that even allowed????”
In a bombshell testimony last year, Britney Spears claimed her guardians refused to let her remove her IUD so she could have another child.
“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” she told the court. “I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married or have a baby.”
Forcing her to use the birth control device violated her rights and amounted to “coercion“, reproductive rights campaigners said at the time.
Spears’ conservatorship, an arrangement she once said was “abusive”, meant that many of her day-to-day decision-making such as healthcare and her career was governed by others such as her father Jamie Spears.
But a now free Britney revealed earlier this month she is expecting a child with Asghari, whom she now refers to as her husband.
Joking that Asghari assumed she was “food pregnant” at first, Spears said she got a pregnancy test following the couple’s trip to Hawaii.
“Uhhhhh well,” she wrote on Instagram, “I am having a baby.”
Spears had two sons, Sean and Jayden, with Federline. She has 30 per cent custody of them both, an arrangement she has reportedly said she wants to change to spend more time with them both.
She suffered from perinatal depression after her first two pregnancies, Spears said, and felt like women couldn’t speak openly about the condition in the 00s.
“Some people considered it dangerous if a woman complained like that with a baby inside her,” she wrote, “but now women talk about it every day.”
