Lady Gaga and Madonna read each other to filth in throwback SNL sketch
A forgotten SNL skit sees Lady Gaga and Madonna trade blows in a hilarious send-up of the pair’s allegedly tense relationship
In the 2009 slip, Lady Gaga and Madonna are performers in a satirical MTV music segment called “Deep House Dish”.
The two icons lightly poke fun at one another as Lady Gaga sings “What’s wrong Madonna can’t get into the groove?”, to which Madonna responds: “I have hundreds of hits and you only have two.”
Lady Gaga interjects and clarified: “I have five.”
They begin fighting as Madonna pulls Lady Gaga’s hair and calls her a “little b***h”, choking one another until they fall on the floor.
After the ‘performance’, the two sit down with ‘hosts’ Kennan Thompson and Andy Samberg. The bickering continues as Lady Gaga says: “Guess what Madonna? I’m hotter than you.”
Madonna stands up and hits back with her own silly retort: “Guess what Lady Gaga? I’m taller than you.”
Madonna proceeds to compare the “Poker Face” singer’s name to baby food, before Lady Gaga hits back and tells her: “At least I’m on the Billboard charts” and Madonna claps back “flavour of the month.”
Thompson tells the two to stop fight and to “kiss and make up”, prompting a three-way kiss.
When Lady Gaga bounded into the music industry with The Fame in 2008, critics soon pitted her against Madonna.
When Madonna was asked by MTV about comparisons being made between her and Lady Gaga at the time, she said: “I’m very flattered.”
Later, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” was accused of being an imitation of Madonna’s song “Express Yourself”.
In a 2012 interview with ABC News, Madonna said the song felt “reductive”. When asked if that was good, she said “Look it up” and proceeded to sip tea.
“There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it … because, obviously, I’ve influenced her,” she added, “When I heard it on the radio …I said that sounds very familiar.”
Madonna would go on to perform a mash-up of “Express Yourself” and “Born This Way” in her concerts.
Lady Gaga adressed this in an 2013 interview with Attitude Magazine. “I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night,” she said.
“I’m certainly not thinking about anybody but me and my fans when I’m on stage. The fact that I was on her mind at all. I mean, Madonna’s… she’s Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I’m not quite sure what her intention was — to do that in the show — but I don’t really care.”
If Lady Gaga and Madonna did at one point have a rocky relationship, they’ve certainly repaired it since.
In 2019 Gaga attended Madonna’s Oscars after-party, and the two cosied up for a selfie.
