Hilary Duff recreates viral anti-homophobia ad and it’s nothing short of iconic
Everyone remembers where they were when Hilary Duff ended homophobia with her now iconic public service announcement about why it was wrong to call negative things “gay”.
In the original video, which ran on US TV in 2008, Duff overhears two girls discussing clothing items in a shop. One calls the other’s top “gay” to which Duff, the original ally, steps in a puts a stop to the situation.
The actress, who played Disney Channel icon Lizzie McGuire in the early 2000s, has recreated it with the help of Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying and his fiancé, Mark Manio.
In a TikTok that has been viewed more than 200,000 times, the trio lip-sync over the advert’s original audio.
@hilaryduff @Scott Hoying & @markmanio410 tying the shirt on as a skirt/top made me say yes😂 also 14 years later -still holds up ♥️
As far as we’re concerned, Hilary Duff deserves an Emmy, Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize for this clip.
Fans have loved it too, with the comment section exploding in adoration.
“Points were made,” commented Ziwe, another cultural icon.
“Most iconic commercial ever and always ahead of the times”, said one user.
Others made more points highlighting the commercial’s impact on young queer kids: “HILARYYY this commercial meant so much to me.”
Another wrote: “I literally stopped saying that cause of this commercial” – proof that Hilary’s influence works.
It’s no surprise the Duff has found devotion among the LGBTQ+ community, she has previously said her gay fans were some of the first people to take her career seriously.
“I’ve felt that support for many, many years,” she said, speaking to PRIDE earlier this year.
“I think the gay community was a huge push for me, of them being behind me and me not even really knowing until being at my concerts and stuff and being like, ‘Oh, wow, like now press has to pay attention to this, because look who’s showing up for me, or like look who’s blasting my s**t.'”
She then dropped another truth bomb.
“I just am so deeply appreciative of all of the support that I’ve had since Lizzie McGuire,” she says, before adding, “but obviously the gays are the most fun.”
We know that’s right, Hilary!
She also recently teased an LGBTQ+ twist for her character in Hulus’ How I Met Your Mother spinoff.
