Issa Rae criticises Hollywood support for Ezra Miller after ‘atrocious behaviour’
Issa Rae has slammed Ezra Miller’s “atrocious” assault allegations and claimed their upcoming film The Flash proves the “lengths that Hollywood will go to to save itself and to protect alleged offenders”.
Miller, 30, has made headlines in recent years following reports of alleged assault, felony theft and child endangerment.
These began with a viral video of Ezra Miller appearing to “choke” a stranger in Iceland in April 2020, with a series of arrests and troubling reports emerging throughout 2022.
Miller has also been accused of “psychologically manipulating” a teenage friend, Tokata Iron Eyes, reportedly using “violence, intimidation, threat of violence, fear, paranoia, delusions, and drugs” to hold sway over the teen.
Despite multiple allegations against the Perks of Being a Wallflower actor, their upcoming DC film The Flash is reportedly still in production with the actor in the titular role, something that Rae said is Hollywood trying to “save itself”.
‘Behaving atrociously’
In an interview with Elle, the Insecure creator, 37, said: “The stuff that’s happening with Ezra Miller is, to me, a microcosm of Hollywood.
“There’s this person… who’s been behaving atrociously, and as opposed to shutting them down and shutting the production down, there’s an effort to save the movie and them.
“That is a clear example of the lengths that Hollywood will go to to save itself and to protect alleged offenders.”
Rae added that some women in Hollywood are living in “fear of keeping silent” about abuse in order to protect their careers.
“It’s just a constant pattern… that’ll only persist if Hollywood continues to insist on being this way,” she added.
Ezra Miller spoke out in August about the string of charges and allegations against them in recent months, stating they have been going through “complex mental health issues” and are seeking treatment.
This came a week after Miller was charged with felony burglary in Vermont after allegedly stealing several alcohol bottles from a home.
Miller told Variety magazine at the time: “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment.
“I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
