‘Young Royals’ stars want a crossover with ‘Heartstopper’ and fans are divided

Young Royals and Heartstopper could have a crossover if the stars of the shows get their way and the internet isn’t sure what to think.

Actor Omar Rudberg called the concept “f**king iconic” and “amazing” in a Friday (14 October) interview with Gay Times.

Edvin Ryding, who plays Swedish royalty Prince Wilhelm, added that the shows “are much alike in various aspects,” but that they “are also two very different kinds of stories.”

Young Royals sees Prince Wilhelm adjust to life in a prestigious new boarding school. After meeting Simon Eriksson (Omar Rudberg), the two fall in love with each other.

Meanwhile, Heartstopper is a coming-of-age romantic comedy in which Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) falls in love with his classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).

The concept is so exciting for the two stars, they began pitching story ideas for the crossover right then and there.

“If Nick and Charlie travelled to Stockholm… Maybe this is like season eight of Young Royals and Simon is a successful singer and the best one in Sweden,” Ryding said. “Charlie’s a big fan, so he takes Nick to Stockholm to see Simon sing. You see where I’m going here?”

He then ecstatically said asked his co-star to call Heartstopper author Alice Oseman and Young Royals writer Lisa Ambjörn to “write something together.”

They’re apparently not the only ones, with fans across social media falling head over heels for the idea.

“I NEED THIS LIKE I NEED AIR OMG,” one user wrote, while another said: “Young Royals and Heartstopper crossover YES PLEASE!”

Others simply adored the passion that Ryding had for the idea, with one saying: “I love the thought that Edvin put into the concept.”

But not everyone was on board, with some claiming the shows are too dissimilar and don’t warrant a crossover episode.

“I’m gonna be so real, a Young Royals x Heartstopper crossover would be weird and never make sense,” one user posted.

Another said that, despite loving both of the shows, they were “completely different” and “would not mesh well.”

“I think it would be awful,” they added.

Season 2 of Young Royals premieres on 1 November

Rudberg admitted that he “screamed with happiness” when reading the new scripts for Young Royals season 2 – which premieres on 1 November exclusively to Netflix.

But Ryding wasn’t as adamant to share the excitement, saying he was “pretty anxious” about the script because he “didn’t understand why [Wilhelm] did what he did this season.”

“I feel like it’s a double-sided nervousness because I’m nervous to see what [the fans] think. I don’t think they’re prepared for what’s coming!

“I can’t say how they will interpret this season and the way the characters act but I’m also nervous, but excited nervous.”

Meanwhile, filming for Heartstopper season 2 is underway with no official release date just yet.
