Former star of the Hallmark network Candace Cameron Bure has issued a bizarre defence after she was accused of homophobia for her comments on keeping Christmas films “traditional”.

Bure left Hallmark Channel this year after more than a dozen festive films, suggesting in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that she didn’t agree with Hallmark’s move towards telling LGBTQ+ Christmas stories. She said that her new channel, Great American Family, “will keep traditional marriage at the core”.

Stars including JoJo Siwa condemned Bure’s comments, with Siwa saying that they were “hurtful” to the LGBTQ+ community.

Now, in a pristinely designed Instagram post brazenly stamped with her own logo, the Full House actress has defended her comments with an odd statement, declaring that “we need Christmas more than ever”.

“To those who hate what I value and who are attacking me online: I love you. To those who have tried to assassinate my character: I love you,” she wrote.

Candace Cameron Bure, 46, added that she “loves” people of all sexualities, regardless of whether they are trying to “bully” her.

She continued to defend her stance, writing that she had “long wanted to find a home for more faith-based programming” and that she is only interested in “celebrating God’s greatness” in the stories she takes part in.

“The God we serve is a wildly creative and loving God. He didn’t just capture a small part of my heart, He has captured all of my heart. He will be reflected in everything I do and say,” she added.

“It is why I love Christmas stories and sharing true joy and true peace with millions of people around the world. And in the sole motivation of pure love, I hope you’ll join me in sharing God’s hope for all the world this Christmas season.”

Following criticism over her comments, some Candace Cameron Bure fans decided to jump to her defence with one saying: “That doesn’t make her homophobic. She simply doesn’t support their lifestyle,” – an interesting take, to say the least.

Many people, including one of Bure’s own Full House co-stars, have called her out for “homophobia disguised as religious beliefs”.

After JoJo Siwa’s Instagram post stating that Candace Cameron Bure was intentionally “excluding LGBTQIA+” people, Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner alongside Bure in Full House, commented: “You know I love you.”

It’s not the first time Bure has taken an anti-LGBTQ+ stance. While co-presenting The View in 2015, she defended a bakery that had refused to make a same-sex wedding cake.
