Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried share their thoughts on a totally fetch Mean Girls sequel
Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried have stunned Mean Girls fans by discussing a potential sequel to the iconic 2004 comedy.
Reuniting for Interview Magazine, the two actors, who played Cady Heron and Karen Smith in the film, discussed their love for the Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls, as well as quickly mentioning the possibility of a sequel.
“I would kill just to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on Mean Girls on Broadway,” Seyfried told Lohan.
“Because a Mean Girls 2 is never going to happen, is it?”
Referencing the possibility of a movie adaptation of the Mean Girls Broadway musical which is said to be in the works, Lohan said: “I heard something about it being a movie musical and I was like, ‘Oh no, we can’t do that’. It has to be the same tone…
“Anyway, Tina [Fey, Mean Girls’ writer] is busy. She’ll get around to it. Listen, we’re all part of each other’s worlds whether we like it or not, and it is really nice to be in contact as adults… Everyone’s still the same.
“It’s fun to have certain memories that we can’t share with anyone else.”
Tina Fey, who wrote the original Mean Girls screenplay, adapted the film into a Broadway musical, which opened in April 2018 and closed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Seyfried added that her appreciation for Mean Girls has grown over time, adding that she is “proud” to be part of the cast.
“Ten years ago I used to be like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I was Karen in Mean Girls, for fuck’s sake’. Now I’m like, ‘I was Karen in Mean Girls and I’m very proud of it,'” she said.
Addressing Lohan, she added: “You had a lot to do with where it went and what it was. I don’t know if you know that. I’m sure you felt the pressure but it didn’t seem like you did.
“You were working really young, and you were really good, but you were still a kid.”
She added that Mean Girls “ended up being more than anyone could have imagined”.
Lizzy Caplan (Janis Ian) also mentioned that she would be on board with a Mean Girls sequel in a separate interview with Grazia USA.
“Of course, I would want to be a part of it. I would be an idiot not to join,” she told the outlet.
“But to me, it feels like Mean Girls had a really good beginning, middle and end. I don’t know what’s left of the story.”
We hate to burst Lohan and Seyfried’s bubbles but Mean Girls 2 is already definitely a thing.
While the 2011 direct-to-video sequel only earned 30 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, it did star an original cast member, with Tim Meadows reprising his role as Principal Duvall.
This knowledge hasn’t stopped fans from rooting for a sequel starring Logan and Seyfried, with one fan saying on Twitter: “No one tell them that Mean Girls 2 is real.”
