Britney Spears discusses ‘unconditional love’ for LGBTQ+ community in new memoir The Woman In Me

The Princess of Pop, Britney Spears, has spoken about her “unconditional love” for the LGBTQ+ community in a passage from her new memoir, The Woman In Me.
Released today (24 October), Britney’s much anticipated memoir explores her tumultuous rise to pop superstardom, her fractured relationship with her family, and her much-publicised, 13-year conservatorship, which she was placed under in 2008.
The star was freed from the conservatorship in 2021, and has since dealt with a number of devastating blows, including the divorce from her husband, actor Sam Asghari, a miscarriage, and losing contact with her sons, Sean and Jayden.
Despite going through a tough time, Britney’s LGBTQ+ fans and friends remain by her side as ever – many of whom led the #FreeBritney movement, which played a pivitol role in seeing the star released from her conservatorship.
It’s a special connection that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the 41-year-old “Womanizer” singer, who pays a brief tribute to the queer community in The Woman In Me.
“For me, it’s all about love – unconditional love,” she writes. “My gay friends were always protective of me, maybe because they knew that I was kind of innocent. Not dumb, but way too kind. And I think a lot of the gay guys around me took on a supportive role.”
Last night (23 October), drag performer Margo Marshall read the sweet extract out as part of a drag-infused launch party for the book in London.
“I grew up in a tiny little town. Little old me is actually working for a Britney Spears event. This is unreal,” Marshall said, according to Wales Online.
Other fans descended on the British capital dressed in “Toxic” drag to be first in line to purchase the new book.
Queer Britney fans are sharing their emotional thoughts on how the legendary pop star “saved” the lives of LGBTQ+ people through her music.
“What [Britney] didn’t realize was her music, artistry, and basically presence, saved so many lives, especially the gays’,” one fan wrote on social media. “Personally, she’s my safest escape from this cruel world. Now it’s time for us to pay her back. We’re gonna protect her at all motherf*cking cost.”
“This made me tear up,” a second wrote of Britney’s heartfelt tribute.
“We as a community love her back so much. She will forever be a beacon of light for us no matter what,” a third fan shared.
It’s not the first time Britney has acknowledged her deep connection with LGBTQ+ people. In 2018, she accepted the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Awards.
“I feel like our society has always put such an emphasis on what’s normal and to be different is unusual or seen as strange,” she said as she accepted the award.
“But to be accepted unconditionally and to be able to express yourself as an individual through art is such a blessing.”
