Hedwig and the Angry Inch is coming back to the West End
Subversive rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch is set to finally return to London’s West End.
The cult musical, written by John Cameron Mitchell, is a cult musical about East German singer Hedwig – who undergoes botched gender reassignment surgery.
Last year the show made a comeback with a large-scale Broadway revival – with a string of huge names taking the leading role, including Neil Patrick Harris, Dexter star Michael C Hall, and Glee star Darren Criss.
Despite a resurgence in popularity, the show has not been on London’s West End for over a decade – but at the Tony Awards on Sunday, Cameron Mitchell confirmed he would stage a new West End revival.
Speaking at the awards, the creator said show is “definitely coming to the West End” – and added that the team are “trying to get the right person” for the lead role.
It is not known if the production will follow the strategy of the successful Broadway revival, in pursuing a string of unconventional big names to put on Hedwig’s heels.
Accepting a special Tony Award, the producer thanked his late partner Jack Steeb, who passed away ten years ago.
He said: “This is especially for mum and dad… for you guys and for Jack Steeb. Thank you so much, everybody.”
